Whether you’re building your college list, or looking for general advice on the college application process, these books can help! Our team read a variety of college app-related books while going through the process ourselves last year, and we’re excited to share our top picks:
This book has everything! In the Fiske Guide, you’ll find the profiles of over 320 four-year schools. In addition to detailed descriptions, student quotes, admissions statistics, popular majors, and financial info, the book also gives each school an academic, social, and quality-of-life rating, and recommends similar schools. It’s a very thick book, but since the editions don’t change too much from year to year (you can look up the most recent statistics online), feel free to borrow a copy from your local library or high school to browse.
“The groundbreaking guide to the 40 best colleges you've never heard of—colleges that will change your life.” Colleges That Change Lives has a good attitude about college applications. It provides in-depth profiles of 40 lesser-known schools that provide high-quality education and experiences. Since this book only covers 40 schools, it’s not the best general resource for building your college list, but it provides a refreshing perspective and is a great way to learn about schools you may not have heard of yet.
If you don’t know where to start at all with college applications, read this book! College Admission provides good, basic, unbiased information about all steps of the college app process, including perspectives from both a dean of admission and a parent.
If you’re looking for more insight into the college application process, rather than a basic step-by-step plan, check out this book! Love the Journey to College, written by an experienced college counselor and her daughter, provides a unique, well-balanced view on applying to college. With all sorts of helpful advice, this book will help you make educated decisions and maintain a positive attitude throughout the process.
